It’s Halloween season once again, and you know what it’s time for? More Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episodes. Now last year, I started a retrospective on my thoughts on The Treehouse of Horror episodes of The Simpsons. I started the series by giving my thoughts on Bad Dream House, Hungry Are the Damned and my all time favorite Treehouse of Horror episode, The Raven. I was supposed to review more last year, but because of time restraints as well as helping the family, I was not able to. (I guess you could consider the first three episodes a a pilot season of this retrospective.) This year, I am gonna make up with the other episodes that were planned for last year, as well as episodes that I have planned for this year (If possible) Also I will be reviewing from now until Thanksgiving in November.
So get ready people for year 2 of this retrospective.
Welcome everyone to:
“TREEHOUSE OF HORROR THEATER 2013”
Let's start with The Monkey’s Paw. This is an interesting little episode and it starts off very well…but way at the end, something happens that makes the episode fall apart for me. What is it, well let’s talk about it.
But first I should mention that this episode(Treehouse of Horror 2) and the next two episodes are dream sequences. One from Lisa, one from Bart and one from Homer. We will look at Lisa’s dream first which is this episode.
After a trip in Moracco, Homer ascertains a Monkey’s Paw, a mystic paw that grants each user wishes. The rule is that each finger represents one wish since this monkey has 4, Homer has 4 wishes…again we will get to that later. However each wish will also come with consequences.
Maggie wished for a new pacifier…which never had any consequences…kay.
Bart wish for the family to be rich and famous only for the people to sart loving them and then hating them later on.
Lisa wished for World Peace, only for Kang and Kodos to invade the earth.
And Homer used the last wish for a sandwich…………and the turkey is dry……………oh no we are doomed.
Homer: Oh and by the way I was being Sarcastic.
Marge: Well duh.
And just like that they ran out of wishes and just when he was gonna throw it out, Homer decides to give it to Flanders so that he can get consequenses as well……Only to get rid of the aliens, get treated like a hero and turned his house into a castle.
Like I said, The Monkey’s Paw was a really interesting episode, It is a good episode, but it is plagued with a major plot hole in my opinion.
First off when The Simpsons used up all of their wishes Flanders gets ownership to the paw as well as to four wishes. Now technically shouldn’t the family EACH have their own four wishes. Maggie gets four wishes, Lisa gets four wishes, Bart gets four wishes and Homer gets four wishes. How does ownership of a Monkey Paw work. Does the rules of it effect a soul person or a family in general? That is something that is never explained in this episode.
And before anyone says anything, yes, I know that I should not take these episodes seriously and I should not overanalyze things like this, but the things with the Monkey Paw really bugs me.
That said though, I do think this is a good Treehouse of Horror episode. It was very funny, and I did like the twists they put on it. But I still can’t overlook that big plot hole.
Overall, while I admit that the episode is good episode, this episode is a netural episode to me. Whether you guys will like this or not, that is up to you to decide.
Overall Rating: YOU DECIDE
Homer: I wish I had a Monkey’s Paw
